Koshimaki Osen - Alex Gross

Koshimaki Osen (2003)
oil on canvas
size: 42 " x 69 "

The Japanese title (koshimaki-osen) means: loincloth hermit. Here it is a homage to Tadanori Yokoo, an internationally renowned Japanese graphic designer, who designed a poster for the stage play of the same title in the late sixties.

Alex Gross received a BFA with Honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 1990.  Since then, he has been a successful freelance illustrator and gallery artist.  Alex taught at his alma mater from 1994 until 2005, and he was the recipient of two faculty grants there.  Alex was also the recipient of the prestigious Artists Fellowship from the Japan Foundation in the year 2000.  Alex’s first monograph The Art of Alex Gross (with an introduction by the well-known science fiction writer Bruce Sterling) was recently published by Chronicle Books.
